Aluminium Sulphate (Alum) for Groundwater Treatment

Product Overview

Aluminium sulphate—commonly known as alum—is the industry's most trusted coagulant for treating raw groundwater. This versatile chemical effectively transforms turbid, untreated groundwater into clear, potable water by removing suspended particles, natural organic matter, and microorganisms .

How It Works

When alum is added to groundwater, it undergoes hydrolysis to form positively charged aluminium species . These species neutralise the natural negative charges on suspended particles, destabilising the forces that keep them apart . Once destabilised, particles collide and bind together, forming larger aggregates called flocs . These flocs are heavy enough to settle out during sedimentation or be removed by filtration .

This two-stage process—coagulation (charge neutralisation) followed by flocculation (particle agglomeration)—is the foundation of effective water clarification .

Key Features & Benefits

Superior Contaminant Removal: Effectively reduces turbidity, colour, natural organic matter, and many inorganic contaminants from groundwater sources

Proven Performance: Demonstrated to significantly reduce multiple physicochemical parameters in raw water, including turbidity, organic matter, and various dissolved ions

Optimal pH Range: Most effective within pH 5.5–7.5, making it ideal for typical groundwater conditions

Versatile Dosing: Typical doses range from 5 to 200 mg/L, with higher doses (up to 500 mg/L) for challenging water qualities

Available Forms: Supplied as liquid solution (typically 8–8.3% w/w Al₂O₃) or solid forms including granular, kibbled, or block grades

Operating Considerations

Groundwater characteristics such as turbidity, alkalinity, temperature, and organic content influence the optimal alum dose . Low turbidity waters with high colour are often the most challenging to treat and may require enhanced coagulation at lower pH levels . For waters with insufficient alkalinity, supplemental alkali addition ensures proper pH control for effective coagulation .

Conclusion

Aluminium sulphate remains the coagulant of choice for groundwater treatment—a reliable, cost-effective solution trusted by water utilities worldwide. Its proven ability to remove turbidity and organic matter, combined with decades of operational experience, makes it an essential tool for delivering safe, clear drinking water.
